Permission to Try Again

You’re Never Too Old, Too Young, or Too Untalented to Sing

Singing is a journey, not a destination. No matter your age or experience, there is always room to learn, grow, and find joy in singing. Whether you are taking your very first voice lesson, returning to singing after many years, or working to refine skills you have been developing for a lifetime, you belong here. There is no perfect age to begin, no deadline for pursuing a dream, and no single path to becoming a singer, and no final point of arrival.

It’s easy to believe that we need to be naturally talented or exceptionally good at something before we deserve to enjoy it. I fell into that trap many years ago. I didn’t make the top choir at my high school, and I interpreted that as, “I am not good enough.” I didn’t try out for any choirs in college, and I didn’t come back to singing for more than a decade. I was watching my daughter perform at her first voice recital and I decided I wanted to sing, too, “innately talented” or not. I’m sad it took me that long to realize singing isn’t about natural talent; it’s about finding joy in making music, at whatever skill level we may be at. I’ve worked hard to develop my vocal skills since then, but that doesn’t mean I finally have permission to call myself a singer. I was a singer when I first began the journey in my youth, even though I wasn’t a pro. What if we gave ourselves permission to be beginners? What if we sang simply because it brings us joy, builds our confidence, or helps us express something words alone cannot? You don't have to be the best singer in the room to experience the magic of music. In fact, some of the greatest rewards come from doing something that challenges us, makes us a little uncomfortable, and reminds us that we are capable of more than we imagined. Every voice has a story worth telling, and every person deserves the opportunity to tell theirs without fear of comparison or judgment.

At our studio, we celebrate progress in all its forms: the note that finally feels easy, the song that once seemed impossible, the courage to sing in front of others, or simply the willingness to show up and try again. Growth isn't always dramatic, and improvement rarely happens overnight. It is built through small, consistent steps and the courage to keep going even when progress feels slow. As you continue your vocal journey, remember that the goal isn't perfection; it's becoming more confident, more expressive, and more connected to the music you love. Keep learning, keep experimenting, and keep singing. Wherever you are in life and wherever you are in your vocal journey, your voice is worth developing, your progress is worth celebrating, and it is never too late to discover what is possible.

What are your singing goals?

“To get a smooth connection over my second passagio"

What are you working on?

“I am working on all my Fantine stuff for Les Mis, and I am working on Once Upon a Time from Brooklyn the Musical and it is just SO high!’

What works for your voice?

“Sirens work really well, and any time I change my vowels to a slant vowel it works way better. I was working on I Dreamed a Dream and it wasn’t working cuz it was a really wide vowel. I changed it to a slant vowel and now it's great!”

What is your favorite singing genre?

“Oh so many.. But musical theater.”

What has been your biggest challenge/improvement?

“My biggest improvement I think really recently has been getting a smooth transition over my first passagio. Now onto the second!!”
